FREE School Holiday Fun for Families
Visit the Far North for that back to nature experience for all the family!
No time for computer games at Cable Bay! There are so many outdoor activities and things to do it is hard to fit them in to a brief visit. Here are a few ideas:
Beach walks and bush walks
Walk around the rocks at low tide from Cable Bay to Taipa and earn a well deserved ice cream! Or check out the pas at either end of Coopers Beach ( see previous posts for suggestions) Or follow the Cable Bay Stream to its source - see if the HUGE eel is still there!
Collect a myriad of shells at Cable Bay
Stroll down the beach and check out the shells that have washed up.
Find the Octopus
There is a shy resident octopus in the rock pools right outside the apartments. Many have seen him or her and you may be lucky too!
Swim and Surf
Yes the water is bracing but so energising and a great way to feel alive. Or catch a surfing school at Taupo Bay to try out your skills.
Dam the Cable Bay Stream
Loads of fun and teamwork can be had trying to dam the stream at Cable Bay or Coopers. Practise for budding engineers!
On the water activities.
We have recently purchased the Driftwood Lodge next door and so you now have 2 dinghies and 2 kayaks to get out amongst it on.
Sand Sculptures
Get those creative juices going and make a fort or sea serpent - or even a toothbrush!
Fishing
Fish off the Mangonui or Mill Bay wharf, where there is loads of activity to observe and fun to be had. Grab the bucket and line and head out to see if sprats or even a kahawai are around.Best time is the incoming tide. You can hire rods from the Sports shop in Coopers Beach.
Best kept secret Beach visits
You haven't experienced the real Far North if you haven't been to Puheke and Karikari Peninsula.
The Coca Cola Lake
Not to be missed fresh water dip in the peaty lake at Tokerau near Ramp Road, where the brown waters tints your skin and you can imagine swimming in Coca Cola!
This is just a sampling of things to do outside in the bay. What can you add to the list?
What our other guests have said
This apartment was in the best location ever being right on the beach- very clean and looked quite new. Everything that ups could think of was provided and there was a great coffee shop with excellent fish and chips and lunch food right across the road also with friendly staff.

GOLDEN SAND “Beachfront accommodation” is an understatement at this Cable Bay establishment. Its five apartments and suites are all a few jandalled steps away from sand and sea, but the beachside cabana takes the prize. It is cleverly self-contained, funkily furnished and...
